In un tempo remoto, quando le colline della Basilicata erano ancora abbracciate da fitti boschi e solcate da fiumi impetuosi, il territorio di Enotria si ergeva come una terra di antiche promesse. Qui, le ninfe Naiadi, figlie delle sorgenti cristalline e dei fiumi che sgorgavano dalle profondità dei monti, custodivano con grazia e devozione i segreti della vita. Queste divinità benevole, con il loro eterno legame con l’acqua pura, donavano fertilità ai campi e proteggevano le comunità che si sviluppavano lungo le rive, assicurando prosperità e abbondanza.
Le popolazioni indigene, conosciute dai Greci come Chones ed Enotri, si insediarono in queste terre, riconoscendo nell’acqua e nel vino un connubio sacro. Il vino, infatti, non era solo una bevanda, ma un elemento rituale, un dono degli dèi stessi, celebrato e consumato in ogni aspetto della vita. L'Enotria, la "terra del vino", prosperava grazie alle mani sapienti dei suoi abitanti, che coltivavano le viti sulle colline baciate dal sole, irrigate dalle acque benedette dalle Naiadi.
La leggenda narra che ogni vigneto fosse un dono delle Naiadi, che infondevano la linfa vitale alle piante, rendendole robuste e generose. Quando un grappolo d’uva veniva deposto in una tomba dell’entroterra lucano, si credeva che fosse un simbolo dell’eterno legame tra il vino, la terra e le acque sacre, un legame che avrebbe attraversato i secoli.
Questa tradizione millenaria continua a vivere oggi a Sasso di Castalda, dove la nostra famiglia con la creazione di Petracastalda ha radicato la sua storia in quelle stesse terre antiche. I bisnonni, come tanti prima di loro, lavoravano la terra con passione e rispetto, coltivando vigneti che raccontavano storie di generazioni e di sacrifici. E proprio da questa eredità, nel 2016, nasce Petracastalda, un’azienda agricola vitivinicola che abbraccia i valori della sostenibilità, del biologico e del vegano.
Il nome stesso, Petracastalda, è un omaggio ai luoghi ed a quelle rocce antiche e a quelle storie di ninfe che ancora oggi sembrano danzare tra i filari delle viti. Ogni bottiglia di vino racchiude in sé non solo i sapori della terra, ma anche il soffio delle Naiadi, che vegliano silenziose sui campi, come hanno fatto per millenni.
Le nostre etichette raccontano questa magia: scorci del paese, con un tocco di incanto, dove le ninfe appaiono, sottili e sfuggenti, ricordandoci che la vera bellezza della nostra terra risiede nella sua storia, nei suoi miti e nella sua capacità di far rivivere antiche tradizioni in un mondo moderno.
Petracastalda non è solo un’azienda agricola; è un ponte tra passato e presente, tra mito e realtà. È la voce di una terra che continua a cantare attraverso le sue viti, e che con orgoglio porta avanti una storia iniziata millenni fa, sotto lo sguardo attento delle Naiadi di Enotria.
Naiads of Enotria: The Story of Petracastalda
In a distant time, when the hills of Basilicata were still embraced by dense forests and crossed by rushing rivers, the land of Enotria stood as a realm of ancient promises. Here, the Naiad nymphs, daughters of the crystal-clear springs and rivers flowing from the depths of the rock, gracefully and devotedly guarded the secrets of life. These benevolent deities, with their eternal bond to pure water, bestowed fertility upon the fields and protected the communities that flourished along the banks, ensuring prosperity and abundance.
The indigenous peoples, known to the Greeks as Chones and Enotri, settled in these lands, recognizing the sacred union of water and wine. Wine, in fact, was not merely a beverage, but a ritual element, a gift from the gods themselves, celebrated and consumed in every aspect of life. Enotria, the "land of wine," thrived thanks to the skilled hands of its inhabitants, who cultivated vines on sun-drenched hills, irrigated by waters blessed by the Naiads.
Legend has it that each vineyard was a gift from the Naiads, who infused the vines with vital sap, making them robust and generous. When a bunch of grapes was placed in a tomb in the Lucanian hinterland, it was believed to symbolize the eternal bond between wine, the land, and the sacred waters—a bond that would endure through the centuries.
This millennial tradition lives on today in Sasso di Castalda, where the Petracastalda family has rooted its history in those same ancient lands. The great-grandparents, like many before them, worked the land with passion and respect, cultivating vineyards that told stories of generations and sacrifices. And it is from this heritage that, in 2016, Petracastalda was born—a winery embracing the values of sustainability, organic farming, and veganism.
The very name, Petracastalda, pays homage to those ancient rocks and the stories of nymphs who still seem to dance among the rows of vines. Each bottle of wine encapsulates not only the flavors of the land but also the breath of the Naiads, who silently watch over the fields, as they have for millennia.
Our labels tell this magic: glimpses of the village, with a touch of enchantment, where the nymphs appear, subtle and elusive, reminding us that the true beauty of our land lies in its history, its myths, and its ability to revive ancient traditions in a modern world.
